As a musician, that’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? How do we improve? How do we grow in mastery – building an intuitive relationship with our instruments?
Because many musicians start. They sign up for lessons. They go to music school. They buy an instrument. But far too many quit or never get started in the first place.
What’s the secret?
I love making music in the church, for the church, to the glory of God.
It’s one of the greatest joys of my life to craft songs, liturgies, services that tell the story of Gospel and help people find their place in it. There’s nothing like hearing the raised voice of a worshiping congregation and seeing the look on people’s faces when they are meeting Jesus.
It will never grow old.
However, I want to talk about another side of the coin if you are a worship musician. If you play music in the local church you’ve probably noticed a trend, at least I have.
Music has become a means to an end.
A great means and a great end, but still, music has become a tool to execute a worship service. I find myself only playing my instrument when I have to prepare for Sunday or when I’m writing a song.

Why is it that we make so many excuses for trying something new? For stepping out?
It’s funny because oftentimes that’s exactly what we need to do to feel the most alive. But I’ll let the video speak for itself.

What makes the gathered church different?
Unique? What are our distinctives? From the outside, many of our modern churches don’t look too different than the nightclub down the street. What sets us apart?
It can’t be our musical quality. The world has plenty of that.
It can’t be our production. The world has plenty of that.
It can’t be how much fun we have. The world has more than enough of that.
That’s not to say quality, production, and fun is wrong or unimportant. But it’s not enough to justify church. If all we’re doing is entertaining people with amazing music, flashy production, and good times, we’re not fulfilling our mission as the church. That’s the hard truth.
The argument has been made that the church should be the most creative place on the planet. On one hand, I agree with this. We as Christians should have a massive imagination because of the God we serve. He is beyond glorious. But at the same time it’s not enough.
Is there a way to combine crazy creativity and yet still maintain who we are as the gathered church? An important question to answer.
