Success Myths: Why You Shouldn’t Wait To Be Discovered

Because if you do, you probably won’t be. Maybe 15 years ago executives and record companies were looking. But not anymore. I’m sorry.

If you want something, you’re gonna have to chase it.

Seth Godin wrote a great post on not waiting to be picked. This applies so perfectly to musicians, artists, and innovators who are waiting to be “discovered”.

No longer can you use “waiting” as an excuse for inactivity. If you want to be discovered, get out there and do something. As Seth states, you have all the resources at your disposal. It’s much easier now to make a high quality recording, start a blog, website, set up a mini-tour, write that song, practice that instrument, and do just about anything.

Go do it.

Yea, it will be hard work. You will have critics. But if you don’t do it, your dream will lay dormant under the rug of good intentions.

A few years ago I decided to make a record. I didn’t wait for a label to come looking for me. I pursued what I felt God released me to do and I did it. Half the battle was simply starting. Finish the songs. Book some studio time. Produce the music. One step at a time.

Put one foot in front of the other.

Though my album wasn’t quite as successful as U2’s “The Joshua Tree” (close, I tell you), that wasn’t the point. I could have waited for the perfect environment, the perfect support, the perfect whatever (which is a myth, anyway).

Or I could just go and do it.

Don’t wait for perfection.

This blog is also another way I put out what I feel I was made to do. I could tweak and edit for months, hold back because I fear rejection, freak out over the lack of comments (OK, I still do sometimes), or I could put it out there. Make something happen. Enrich other people’s lives. Make a difference.

And you should too. Don’t wait.

So go… make your art.
