Today’s podcast is sponsored by Omnisphere by Spectrasonics. Omnisphere is my latest piece of software for keys and probably the only one I’ll ever need. Incredible pads and textures, innovative keyboard sounds, strings, lead synths, basses and arpeggios, it’s got it all. Literally some of the best sounding patches for keys I’ve ever heard.
We’re in the production stages of recording our next live album and Omnisphere is becoming a massive part of our sound for this project. Run it through MainStage, Logic, Pro Tools, or even Garage Band and you have keys rig for your worship sets that is better sounding and more customizable than anything you’ve ever experienced. Check it out!
In this Episode, You’ll Hear More About:
- Will’s journey into electronic music.
- The power of encouragement and speaking into others.
- The shift of sound in worship music to becoming more software based.
- The value of using clicks & loops in worship.
- Why you need to train and invest in your volunteers.
- Will’s recommended setup for using loops.
- Best practices for using Ableton Live in worship.
- The pros & cons of Ableton versus ProTools.
- Using Ableton as a VST host.
- Best practices for keys players transitioning to software.

Patrick says
Great – does Will use 2 computers? One for Live one for instruments?
Will Doggett says
@Patrick,
Most of the time one. Sometimes (very rarely) two.
Tim says
I lead a small team in a church of about 80 regulars with no instruments at the moment, only backing tracks. There’s also the issue of no budget for developing things like this but I’m willing to invest my own money until money is available from the church in the future. What benefits, if any, would outweigh the out of pocket costs to get started with computer, loop, and multitrack style worship that would take us above and beyond where we are now?
David Santistevan says
Tim, all I can say is that using the multitracks will help set you up for when you do have a band. It really doesn’t have to be that expensive. Instead of a computer you could use the multitracks playback app for running loops. There is a free version for that.
Will Doggett says
Tim,
Start with Playback Intro or free app, using the free content and build from there. The biggest benefit of going to Multitracks instead of backing tracks is as you get musicians you can mute their part and build a band around it. And you have the freedom to repeat sections etc.. But I also wanted to state as I always do when teaching at conferences-to not feel pressure to do this. Don’t feel like you HAVE to play to Multitracks. It’s a great thing and a great benefit, but you’re ministry will do well even without them.
Neal says
Hey there…enjoyed the podcast very much…always a great resource!
Will try to get my skills up as a Worship leader and keyboardist…
I did check out Omnisphere, but was surprised by the price…thought Will said it was about $100? Its more like $499… 🙁
David Santistevan says
No, I don’t think Will said it was $100. It’s definitely a “boutique” software instrument. I’ve been waiting for them to release a lighter version that is much less expensive. Here’s hoping 🙂
Will Doggett says
@Neal, You likely caught me talking about Ableton Live Intro which is $100. If you’re getting started with Keys get MainStage- $30, great sounds. When you’re ready for the next step Omnisphere-hands down the best synth especially for worship!
Dalend says
Another great episode David. thank you.
Totie says
I’m new to Ableton and Omnisphere, I use Korg Nanokontrol2 to control Ableton. Straight to the point: I wanted to arm multiple Omnisphere tracks to layer the sound like a nice rhodes and pads. I can do it on my laptop by holding “ctrl” button on the laptop keyboard while mouse clicking the “record” button on Ableton. If I don’t hold “ctrl” button it only arm the track one at a time. I wanted to be able to do this using Nanokontrol2 using the builtin “record” button and it only arm the tracks one at a time but I haven’t been able to figure it out yet. It sounds so simple but again I’m an Ableton newbee, pls help.

Hi, I’m wanting to start using pads and sounds with my keys. I don’t have a MAC computer. Would I still be able to use Mainstage with my Acer laptop or does it only work on Apple Computers? I heard about Ableton and omnisphere , but budget is a problem. What do you suggest I use?
