Our planning matters. The songs we choose matter. The heart we bring matters. The more I feel this weight the more I become concerned for worship leaders and how we’re shaping the culture in our churches.
Are we trying to be too cool?
Are we trying to be too clever?
Are we getting in the way of God?
We’ve all been there.
The last thing we want to do is sing How Great is Our God or Here I Am to Worship…again. They feel old, tired, and worn out.
Songs go through cycles. It’s possible to do them to often as well as not enough. Striking that balance is tricky, to say the least.
But just because a song is old doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant. Great worship songs stand the test of time because they take a timeless message and wrap it in a fresh sound.
Leading worship can be overwhelming sometimes, right?
Not only do you have to worship God with all your heart, you have to lead a band, play an instrument, sing, engage a room, please your leaders, and be theologically sound. There’s a lot to juggle.
Of course, worship isn’t about music, singing, stage presence, personality, but it doing it well does include all of these. My goal with this article is to break down 4 essential skills that every worship leader needs to focus on.
Leading Worship is about connecting human hearts to something greater.
It’s about shining a spotlight on the glory of God and getting out of the way. It’s about drawing attention to something outside of yourself. But isn’t it true how often our worship sets do anything but that.

No, I’m not here to make fun of specific worship leaders. I’m not here to label you as awkward. But I do believe there is too much at stake for us to be a hindrance rather than a help to worship.
Your church doesn’t need you to be a rockstar. They don’t need you to be the best in world. They don’t even need you to impress them. They just need you to create a safe place.
