Confessions Of An Inconsistent, Terrible Bible Reader

CONFESSIONS OF AN

I’m going to be totally honest: I didn’t read my Bible much last year.

I started out strong with my Bible reading plan but it soon fizzled out.

It’s not what I ran to first thing in the morning. It’s not what I memorized. It’s not what I meditated upon day and night.

It’s not that I was lazy. I was actually fairly productive and got a lot of things done. But productivity without a sense of purpose connected to the Kingdom of God is meaningless.

I’m bringing this up because I know my own weakness. I know how to be a great worship leader but not know my God. I can memorize a worship song in 30 seconds but not open my Bible for months. I know how to read inspiring book after book but never seek God’s Word for myself.

For a while, I didn’t see this as much of a problem. I’ve read through the Bible multiple times in year’s past. I was raised in the church and knew all the stories and the general arc of Scripture. I had gone to Bible School, read Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology, and boasted a massive ESV Study Bible.

To put it bluntly, I knew how to coast my present on what I learned in the past.

But I’m finished with that plan. Because it’s not working.

Is Scripture something that needs to be looked at, meditated on, pored over consistently? The answer is a resounding yes.

Jesus Christ never gets boring. What happens is we get caught up in the things that surround Him.” – Bob Kauflin

This is a podcast I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Bob Kauflin is such a strong voice to the worship community. He’s the writer of the super popular Worship Matters and most recently True Worshipers: Seeking What Matters to God. He’s the leader of Sovereign Grace Music, a community of songwriters and worship leaders who write strong theological songs for the local church.

In this chat we discuss Sovereign Grace, the glories of Jesus, how to give and receive criticism, knowing truth, and so much more.

Enjoy!

Is Our Worship Too Emotional?

How emotional should our worship be-

When you worship Jesus, how emotional do you get?

Do you cry? Do you raise your hands? Do you dance? Do you kneel? Do you sing?

This is an important conversation to be having because let’s face it – some of us are more naturally emotional than others. For some of you, it doesn’t take much for you to cry. But some of you struggle – bigtime – in corporate worship because you’ve hardly every cried in your life. You’re more dignified, reserved. It’s not that you don’t love Jesus. You’re just not expressive.

But is this an issue where we say, “To each his own?” Or is there a biblical, God-directed way for all the people of God to worship?

Is our worship too emotional?

Are You Building A Career Or Building The Kingdom?

my valentine-

This morning I happened to read one of my favorite Scriptures in the Bible:

“For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption” (Acts 13:36).

This verse challenges everything I do with my life.

When it all comes down to it, am I building a career or the Kingdom? Am I serving God’s purpose or my own? What about you?

Ministry is an interesting challenge. It goes against the current of our culture, which is all about building a career and climbing the corporate ladder.

There’s nothing wrong with building a career, of course. You can still build a career and build the kingdom. It’s all about a mindset shift which works its way into how you work.

Whether you’re an employee, an entrepreneur, or a full time pastor, we all have the temptation of building something other than the kingdom. But the Kingdom of God is why we’re here and we can’t lose sight of that.
