The One Thing The Best Leaders Do

Don’t go through the motions. Don’t just wear the mask. Be authentic. Be real.”

We’ve heard all of these axioms, haven’t we? We know worship is a lifestyle and we need to live it before we sing it. These things are easy to preach, fun to write articles about.

It’s easy to toss these statements around to your team. Why? Because you’re a leader. You have to have something to say. You need to lead, have a plan, be in charge.

But many of us are sleepwalking leaders. Our eyes are open but we’re far from awake.

This might not be want you wanted to hear today. What I want to challenge you with isn’t easy. It’s time to step into the fullness of God this year. That’s what I’m doing. What about you?

It’s time to live a faith that costs you. Enough talking. More doing.

#170: Rend Collective On Celebration, Laments, & Good News [Podcast]

We’re not rockstars. We’re the furthest thing from it. We don’t even consider ourselves good musicians.” – Gareth Gilkeson

When I listen to Rend Collective, it makes me happy. There’s a contagious joy about their music and the fact that they’re having an incredible time doing what they do. I think worship teams have a lot to learn from these guys.

That’s why it’s such a privilege to welcome Gareth Gilkeson on to the show. This conversation was a ton of fun. First of all, because Gareth is hilarious. Second, his accent is better than mine. And third, he recorded this in a trampoline park with noisy, jumping children everywhere. It’s a recipe for awesomeness.

We talk about the band, celebration, laments in worship, running, creativity, the new record and more!

#169: Jeremy Riddle On Overcoming Self Doubt, Vulnerability, & Keeping Your Heart Alive [Podcast]

My journey wasn’t about coming back to worship leading. It was about coming back to God.” – Jeremy Riddle

What I love most about this conversation with Jeremy Riddle is his unrelenting passion for God Himself, not just worship. Too many of us are chasing worship careers and have lost sight of what it means to chase God and God alone.

So prepare for your heart to be stirred. This is what it’s all about. Jeremy and I discuss getting older in ministry, the new album, Bethel Music, keeping your heart alive, splitting word (yes), and so much more.

If you need to be encouraged and challenged, don’t miss this!

#168: Sara Groves on The Artist’s Calling, Truth Telling, & Hymns [Podcast]

Music has always been a very necessary part of my life.” – Sara Groves

It’s an honor to welcome one of my favorite songwriters to the show today. For years Sara has written honest, delicate, vulnerable songs.

In this interview we talk about the new record, Art House North, vulnerability, art, songwriting process, and more!

A Simple Shift To Increase Engagement In Your Church’s Worship

As worship leaders, we love compliments. We love to be validated for what we do.

While we don’t lead for the validation, it’s always nice when others confirm God’s call and say we’re going in the right direction. A few weeks ago was one of those moments.

Following the service, an older man approached me. No offense to older people, but it does make me nervous at times what they’re going to say. I’ve heard quite a few “it’s too loud,” “I don’t like the songs,” “I can’t even be in the room during worship” comments.

But even that negative feedback over the years has helped me. It’s helped me be a better leader. It’s helped me bend not just toward the next generation but the older generation as well. It’s helped me realize that worship isn’t just about being cool it’s about being compassionate to all generations and helping give voice to the people, not just myself.

So…back to the approaching older man.
