If I showed up at your church and asked, “I feel called to lead worship. Can you help me?”
What would you say? Would you have a process in place to help me?
If you’ve read this blog for a while, you know we are all about discipleship.
But discipleship can be difficult if you don’t know how to disciple. What are the specific areas a young worship leader needs to work on?
I was talking to a worship pastor friend of mine a couple weeks ago who loves what he does.
He loves his church, is engaged with the mission, and looks forward to what he gets to do. He and his pastor have a wonderful relationship.
I have another friend who seemingly wants to slit his wrists every time we have a conversation about his church and his full time job as a worship pastor.
This seems to be common. Many worship leaders I know love what they do and where they get to serve. Sill, many more seem completely dissatisfied and disillusioned.
This is a scary question, right?
Because often when lead, we’re not fully present. Our minds are somewhere else. And when we confront our true motives, we may not like what we see.
But I want you think about this. What is on your mind when you lead worship?
My mind races through a million things, from:
Have you ever been in a worship service where the worship leader felt disconnected? Fake?
Maybe they seemed more into their music than their God. Maybe they seemed to be all about themselves rather than Jesus.
Whatever the case, sincerity is so important. Where you may lack a certain level of skill, your sincerity and passion for Jesus will make up for it.
I’m not saying your musical growth isn’t important. If you can’t sing on key or play your I IV V chords, no one will want to worship with you. But your church is looking for more than a good show and a fun sing-a-long. They are starving for God.
Around the holiday season, without a doubt, worship leaders are busy.
There’s Christmas productions, new year planning, and extra services happening.
It’s easy to fall prey to the rush – where you are simply pulling things off in order to survive.
Matter of fact…this feeling can continue throughout the year. Service to service. Just getting things done. Checking off the to-do list.
But what if you could be more present? Slow down enough to realize the miracle that is happening before you?
